St. Patrick's Day Party 2009

OLLI members with or without an Irish heritage gathered on March 17 in the spacious OLLI lounge to play games, drink emerald-colored punch and devour a delicious assortment of cookies. Hosted by the Special Events Committee, the party began with an ice-breaker that had everyone searching for someone to do an Irish Jig for them, as well as finding others who knew a lot about the patron saint himself.

When Patrick Reilly took the floor with his "Tale of a Cow" we were in for an amazing story, which involved Pat buying a calf in 1999 during a visit his family's ancestral home near Knock a Hoppie, Ireland. He gave the calf back to the farmer with the understanding that it should be used to help other families in the area. As the tale developed, the calf became a cow and had at least five calves, which were given to benefit others in the town. In telling his tale, Patrick had pictures and momentos to prove he wasn't giving us "blarney"!

The party's final game of "hot potato" proved we seniors are agile and able to play kiddy games. Prizes were given to the lucky Irish potato passer. At the end of the party, most felt we had honored Saint Patrick in a most enjoyable way. See photos.

OLLI Holiday Social, 12/12/08

This was the first joint social activity to which OLLI members from the Arts and Sciences and Computer Training areas were invited. The 50-60 who attended enjoyed excellent Christmasy refreshments while being entertained in various ways -- see the earlier post. Some informal photos were taken and may be viewed here. Our WOW (Writers of Wisdom) group gathered on Monday, 12/15, at the home of Marilyn Bartholomew for their annual Christmas pot luck lunch and much camaraderie. Dr. Jennifer Salmon, our original class teacher in 1997, was the guest of honor. She is included in our bonding since she started us on our 11 year journey of recording our life stories. Jennifer edited WOW, our first anthology publication and also WOW AGAIN, our second anthology book. Member Sachi Ann Welsh was the much appreciated organizer for this new edition which arrived just in time for Monday's distribution to WOW members for family Christmas presents. Both WOW anthologies can be viewed in the OLLI office. -- Marilyn Bartholomew

December 10th Holiday Party

The Activities Committee held a Holiday Gathering on December 10^th for all OLLI members. Cookies, Coffee, Tea and Punch were provided while "Getting to Know Your Fellow OLLI Members" was to be the theme.

An Ice Breaker was suggested to encourage each person to approach other guests by seeking answers to a set of questions. Maru Lou Crawford proceeded to work on this project that would contain assorted challenges. Pat Brunkow and Natalie Glynn later met with Maru Lou and suggestions were gathered for suitable questions such as “What does GSIG stand for?” or “Approach someone and sing Happy Birthday, just because”. Lee Redford contributed prizes for the first four people that completely filled up their card. The room was alive with activity from the 50 or so guests during this question and answer session.

Three men’s cotton LIR shirts left over from an earlier sale were then auctioned. Karen Brown-Blonigen was recruited to be the in-house auctioneer and she plied her wares and disposed of them by encouraging spirited bidding.

For this free event it was suggested members bring non-perishable food items to donate upon arrival. Blanche Shelton had contacted the Metropolitan Ministries about our project and they accepted with gratitude and delivered a container. We filled the barrel to over flowing and along with the cash from the auction it was felt that we all had been a part of special successful gathering. – Natalie Glynn

OLLI USF at John Knox Village

In a new OLLI endeavor, the first ever computer training class (Introduction to Computers I) was held at John Knox Village Sept. 16-25, 2008. [Pictured, left to right, are class participants Mary Zimmer, Leo D'Amico, George Griffith, (Instructor) Jim Kaehler, and Edith Eaton. Not pictured- Tony Eberwein.]
While the computer facility at JKV is limited in size, the enthusiasm of the students was great. Additional classes are being scheduled for the future to meet an apparent continuing interest among JKV residents. -- Jim Kaehler
